Assign Drive letter to a folder

Do you use a particular folder very often on your PC??Do you feel sick of going through all the navigation hierarchy to access the contents of that folder??Ok one way to circumvent it is to create a shortcut to that folder on your desktop. you just need to right click the folder :goto sendto and select "Desktop(create shortcut)".
There is one another way to do the same which I think is more geeky!!Here we use a MS-Dos command called "subst" or "SUBSTITUTE" which creates a drive letter on your MyComputer linking the desired folder.
For example you need to create a drive letter for a folder say "D:\jdk1.5.0_07\demo\jfc\Java2D"
Open Dos using "command" at the "Run" menu



Type subst f: "D:\jdk1.5.0_07\demo\jfc\Java2D" then enter
Voila a drive letter with F: is created in your Mycomputer

Some Tips/Tricks for computer Users

**How to increase life of your DVD drive
Now almost everyone watch movies on their computer's Dvd rom drive.
There is a software called DVD Idle Pro which can really increase the life of your dvd drive.

By using the "Smart Read-ahead" Cache, DVDIdle saves DVD data which will be played soon onto the hard disk cache or RAM cache, and then feeds it to DVD player. This allows the DVD drive to rest. For example: a 6X-speed DVD drive will only work for 15 minutes when you are watching a 90 minutes DVD movie.

**Some Mouse wheel tricks/tips
If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel on it, you can do some cool things listed below:

1.CTRL + Spin(I love this)
If you are in a web browser (Explorer or Netscape or Firefox) , hold down your Ctrl key and spin the wheel. It makes the text larger or smaller depending on which way you spin. For Opera users, it magnifies both the images and the text.

2.Shift + Spin
Ever wonder what happens when you hold down the Shift key on a web page and spin the wheel on your wheel mouse? Explorer goes either back or forward, depending on which direction you spin.
Give it a try. Open up Internet Explorer(or any other browser) and follow a few links. Then, hold down your SHIFT key and spin that wheel.

**Firefox extension to Translate
This is a small extension that translates Web pages (via the toolbar button) or selected text (via the context menu) from several different foreign languages into English.This plug-in (extension) uses babel fish to translate pages. It’s small, but it does the job effectively.

**Trick to lock your private folder

Many will be familiar with this simple trick.
What I am using here is windows renaming trick including any registry entry and DOS batch files.
Suppose you want to lock the folder "Games" in D: which has the path D:\Games -
In the same drive create a text file and type
ren games games.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Now save this text file as ren.bat
--U can use any reg word like above from your registry(Run-->Regedit)

Create another text file and type in it
ren games.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} games

Now save this text file as Key.bat
Now you can see 2 batch files Ren and Key.Press Ren.bat and the folder "Games" will change to control panel and you cannot view its contents.Press Key.bat and you will get back your original folder.
To save the above 2 bat files anywhere on comp ...to do that u can provide absolute path of your folder to be locked in batch files.

XP's Little-Known 'Rebuild' Command

There's an easy fix for "Missing HAL.DLL," "Invalid Boot.Ini," and several other fatal startup errors.Use at your own risk if you have such problems, but it might be something worth jotting down for later on, as I have had to deal with many Windows XP problems where files were missing and I just had to start over with a fresh install.

* Boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console
* Run "Attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file
* Delete the C:\Boot.ini file
* Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild"
* Run Fixboot

Worm automates Google AdSense fraud

Click-fraud menace spreads using IM
Virus writers have crafted a malware threat that serves up expensive Google AdSense web pages related to mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.The cost-per-click for the term "mesothelioma" is among the highest in the online ads business ranging from $4 to $13 and higher on various keyword bidding networks.

This, in turn, makes the term a prime target for click-fraud. Google AdSense allows online publishers to make revenue by displaying Google ads relevant to the content of their site. Because Google pays the host Web site based on the number of clicks on their ads, the process can be susceptible to "click-fraud".

The KMeth worm, which targets Yahoo! Messenger users, directs infected users to a web site serving a barrage of Google AdSense advertisements related to mesothelioma. Financially-motivated malware writers apparently hope to cash on the ruse through shares in the resulting advertising commissions which we doubt will materialise. Fraud detection mechanisms employed by Google are more than likely to identify rogue sites generating suspiciously high returns using such illicit tactics but that doesn't eliminate the other security risks consumers face from the worm.

KMeth exploits IE vulnerabilities to infect surfers who visit malware infested sites controlled by hackers, promoted through IM messages sent to the Yahoo! Messenger contacts of infected users. The "status message" in Yahoo! Messenger can also be also hijacked, presenting potentially enticing messages to their contacts, such as "check out my blog" in order to trick potential marks into becoming infected, IM security firm FaceTime reports.

Meanwhile an infected user's IM control panel is disabled, and their home page is hijacked to point towards rogue web sites designed to generate maximum revenue through click fraud. Using malware to perpetrate click-fraud is an established technique but the KMeth worm extends this idea by employing a battery of social engineering techniques.

AOL releases free anti-virus tool - Its very good

AOL is giving consumers a free anti-virus software package, dubbed Active Virus Shield, powered by technology from Kasperesky Lab.
No AOL membership is required to use the service, though users are obliged to submit their email details in order to activate the technology.

Although free anti-virus packages already permeate the market, most notably Grisoft's AVG, coverage is far from universal, so AOL's entry is welcome.A US study by the National Cyber Security Alliance last December found that more than half (56 per cent) of the participants either had no anti-virus protection or had not updated it within the last week.


Active Virus Shield offers protection against viruses, spyware, malware and Trojans before they attack, as well as real-time scanning of files and email. Signature updates are updated "every hour", a significant difference from other free packages that offer far less frequent updates.

The software comes bundled with a free security toolbar for IE users. The toolbar includes a a password manager, pop-up blocking technology, and a link to the Whois domain registration database that allows users to find more information about potentially suspicious sites.

AOL's anti-virus software promo is the latest give-away in its strategy of becoming more like a portal, such as Yahoo!, and less like a conventional ISP. Last week, AOL announced plans to give away integrated email and software, security and other products as part of a strategy to drive more traffic to its sites and ramp up advertising revenue.

In recent days, AOL has offered web users 5GB of free storage online and a range of web-based security products (via AOL Safety and Security Centre) to which it is adding Active Virus Shield as a software download. Free products including personalised email domains, video and search, as well as an update of its AOL software, are promised over coming weeks.

Use TransSend to wirelessly transfer content from a web browser to your mobile device

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) issued a press release announcing its new TransSend client/server application that allows you to receive content via Bluetooth from the internet.
This seems to be an excellent way to get maps, addresses, phone numbers, images, and other content to your mobile device when surfing the net on your PC. It isn't designed to tranfer large documents or content tho'.
TransSend works by having the user initiate the transfer on the PC by right clicking or by click on a TransSend icon next to the content. TransSend uses the Object Push Profile (OPP) to send content from Windows XP and 2000 computers with Internet Explorer and Bluetooth radio. Mac and Linux support is currently not available, but is under consideration.

TransSend System Requirements:

The system requirements for using TransSend are modest. To use TransSend, you need the following:

1) A Bluetooth enabled PC with
a) Windows XP
+ Using one of the following Bluetooth software stacks:

AMD Unveils Barcelona Quad-Core Details

At Microprocessor Forum, AMD's media person Ben Sander laid out architecture details of the CPU maker's upcoming quad-core Opterons. The processors will feature sped-up floating-point operations, improvements to IPC, more memory bandwidth, and improved power management.AMD claims that its quad core is true quad core, while Intel's is two dual-cores grafted together.

Illegal Vista OS to become crippled after 30 days

Unlike previous Windows OS,Vista is loaded with inbuilt abilities to stop piracy to some extent!!
HAHAHA...waiting when somebody hacks this feature itself and MS starts distributing patches every month!!!hehe

In summary the main features are:

  • Reduced Functionality Mode: this allows minimal use of the OS until it is validated. Microsoft has not disclosed full technical details, but they have indicated that the web browser (presumably IE) will work for about an hour before interrupting the session and forcing you to log off. Additional limitations are described below.
  • Buy a key online: Go online, buy a new key, and you're done.
  • Phone in for activation: instructions on how to activate over the phone rather than the Internet. (i really dont know who uses this feature now!!)
  • Enter your key : Yada yada yada!!!
In short, unless you input a legit key, or purchase one after 30 days of using the Operative System it will "lock down" it's best functionalities.

However, even if your key is identified as legit, Microsoft will continue to monitor your machine permanently, and if your key becomes invalid, or your system is identified as illegal you will receive a warning and it will lock down in 30 days from there onward.

Microsoft knows that this won't stop piracy completely, but at least they have a more realistic goal this time.

The company says it is interested in continuing to build tools that make it difficult and inconvenience to be a pirate.

Not all of these pages are administrator's access databases containing usernames, passwords and other sensitive information, but many are!

DCForum's password file. This file gives a list of (crackable) passwords, usernames and email addresses for DCForum and for DCShop (a shopping cart program(!!!). Some lists are bigger than others, all are fun, and all belong to googledorks. =)

This search brings up sites with "config.php" files. To skip the technical discussion, this configuration file contains both a username and a password for an SQL database. Most sites with forums run a PHP message base. This file gives you the keys to that forum, including FULL ADMIN access to the database.

eggdrop filetype:user user
These are eggdrop config files. Avoiding a full-blown descussion about eggdrops and IRC bots, suffice it to say that this file contains usernames and passwords for IRC users.

intitle:index.of.etc
This search gets you access to the etc directory, where many many many types of password files can be found. This link is not as reliable, but crawling etc directories can be really fun!

filetype:bak inurl:"htaccess|passwd|shadow|htusers"
This will search for backup files (*.bak) created by some editors or even by the administrator himself (before activating a new version).
Every attacker knows that changing the extenstion of a file on a webserver can have ugly consequences.

Let's pretend you need a serial number for windows xp pro.

the key is the 94FBR code.. it was included with many MS Office registration codes so this will help you dramatically reduce the amount of 'fake' porn sites that trick you.

Intel pledges 80 cores in five years

INTEL CEO Paul Otellini reveals plans at IDF to ship a "teraflop" processor around the end of decade with 80 cores.
Intel has built a prototype of a processor with 80 cores that can perform a trillion floating-point operations per second.
CEO Paul Otellini held up a silicon wafer with the prototype chips before several thousand attendees at the Intel Developer Forum here Tuesday. The chips are capable of exchanging data at a terabyte a second, Otellini said during a keynote speech. The company hopes to have these chips ready for commercial production within a five-year window.

Intel uses its twice-yearly conference to educate developers on its long- and short-term plans. Over three days, hardware developers and partners get a chance to interact with Intel employees and take classes on new technologies.

As expected, Intel announced plans to have quad-core processors ready for its customers in November. An extremely fast Core 2 Extreme processor with four cores will be released then, and the newly named Core 2 Quad processor for mainstream desktops will follow in the first quarter of next year, Otellini said.

The quad-core server processors are on a similar trajectory, with a faster Xeon 5300 processor scheduled for November and a low-power Xeon slated for the first quarter. Intel's first quad-core processors are actually two of its dual-core Core architecture chips combined into a multichip package.

"Performance matters again," Otellini said, disclosing that the quad-core desktop processor will deliver 70 percent faster integer performance than the Core 2 Duo, and the quad-core server processor will be 50 percent faster than the Xeon 5100 introduced in June.

One reason performance didn't matter to Intel during the last couple of years was because it was getting trounced on benchmarks at the hands of Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron and Athlon 64 server and desktop processors. That all changed with the introduction of the Core 2 Duo chips this year.

"With this new set of dual and quad-core processors, we've regained our leadership," Otellini told developers. The growing Internet video phenomenon, as evidenced by the spectacular rise of Web sites like YouTube, will keep these processors busy during intensive tasks like video editing, he said.

Road to Santa Rosa

Notebooks will get a face-lift next year with the Santa Rosa platform, which will provide notebooks with new technologies like 802.11n wireless and flash memory. Intel believes that it will be the first to add flash memory to a notebook motherboard, which will improve boot times and reduce power consumption, Otellini said.

System power consumption is only one part of the equation. During the next few years, Intel wants to improve the performance per watt of power consumption of its transistors by 300 percent through new manufacturing technologies and designs, Otellini said. The next step on that road, Intel's 45-nanometer manufacturing technology, will enable the company to build chips that deliver a 20 percent improvement in performance with five times less current leakage, he said.

But the ultimate goal, as envisioned by Intel's terascale research prototype, is to enable a trillion floating-point operations per second--a teraflop--on a single chip. Ten years ago, the ASCI Red supercomputer at Sandia National Laboratories became the first supercomputer to deliver 1 teraflop using 4,510 computing nodes.

Intel's prototype uses 80 floating-point cores, each running at 3.16GHz, Justin Rattner, Intel's chief technology officer, said in a speech following Otellini's address. In order to move data in between individual cores and into memory, the company plans to use an on-chip interconnect fabric and stacked SRAM (static RAM) chips attached directly to the bottom of the chip, he said.

Intel's work on silicon photonics, including its recent announcement of a silicon laser, could help contribute toward the core-to-core connection challenge. Rattner and professor John Bowers of the University of California at Santa Barbara demonstrated Intel's newest breakthrough model of silicon laser, which was constructed using conventional techniques that are better suited to volume manufacturing than older iterations of the laser.

Many of the architectural nuances of the 80-core chip can be traced back to earlier research breakthroughs announced at previous IDFs. Connecting chips directly to each other through tiny wires is called Through Silicon Vias, which Intel discussed in 2005. TSV will give the chip an aggregate memory bandwidth of 1 terabyte per second.

Intel, meanwhile, began to discuss replacing wires with optical technology in computers and chips in 2001 and has come out with several experimental parts for enabling lasers and optical technology to replace wires.

The same year, Intel began to warn about the dangers of heat dissipation in processors. One of the solutions, the company said at the time, lay in producing chips with multiple cores.

Untraceable Messaging Service Raises a Few Eyebrows - read on

A messaging service called VaporStream announced today at DEMOfall will allow any two parties to communicate electronically without leaving any record of their interaction on any computer or server. Messages cannot be forwarded, edited, printed or saved. After they're read, they're gone.

Void Communications had better be ready for a call from Department of Homeland Security. Why? Because in a world where a bottle of shampoo is considered a risk to commercial aviation it's likely that federal security officials will see red flags in a service designed to provide any two people -- say, Osama bin Laden and his right-hand man in the U.S. -- with an electronic communications channel that leaves not a trace of its contents or the identities of the participants.

Key to Void's Web-based VaporStream service is the fact that at no time does the body of the message and the header information appear together, thus leaving no record of the interaction on any computer or server. The message cannot be forwarded, edited, printed or saved, and, once it's been read, it disappears; nothing is cached anywhere. No attachments allowed.

"If you need a record, use e-mail. If you don't, use VaporStream," said Void CEO Joseph Collins in the company's morning presentation at DEMOfall.

Billed as potentially controversial by show organizers, it's not difficult to see why an application of this sort would cause concern among corporate security officials in addition to the feds.

"Bad people can do bad things with just about anything," Void's chief brand officer Bob Hall told me at the company's show booth. The company doesn't see VaporStream being a useful tool for terrorists because it's built for one-to-one conversations, not one to a group. As for corporate concerns, Hall says companies will need to fashion acceptable-use policies and, in some cases, block access to VaporStream, depending on their security needs.

What they're trying to do with VaporStream is provide a secure, confidential means of communication that also happens to be recordless.

"Good guys need confidentiality, too," notes DEMO Executive Producer Chris Shipley.

She's right, of course, but that's not going to stop people from raising concerns.

Microsoft launches the Zune!

As expected, Microsoft is busting out the Zune today, and we've got the rundown. Not a lot of surprises in the specs department, but they've confirmed the basics we've known for a while, like WiFi, 30GB of HDD, built-in FM, a 3-inch screen and the basic music, pictures and video playback. They also finally let slip the screen res -- an unsurprising QVGA -- and some better news on the codec front: the Zune supports h.264, MP3, AAC and WMA. As for ballyhoo, wireless Zune-to-Zune sharing is where the real action is at, and it works pretty much like we've been hearing: you can share a full-length track with a friend, and they've got three times to listen to it over a three day period, after which they can flag the song for purchase on the Zune Marketplace -- unless they're an unlimited "Zune Pass" subscriber, of course. You can also share playlists and pictures with your buddies, along with what we suppose are "unprotected" homemade recordings. So far Microsoft isn't mentioning Live Anywhere functionality, but they do hint heavily at future software updates to take even better advantage of the wireless capabilities. Of course, it all really comes down to matching your Zune with that snazzy new fall wardrobe of yours, and to that end the Zune comes in black, brown and white. Sadly, Microsoft still won't spill the beans on pricing and availability (other than a vague "this holiday season"), so we'll keep an eye out for that just like always. About twenty years ago Jobs athe founders of Apple, came up with the very strange idea of selling information processing machines for use in the home. The business took off, and its founders made a lot of money and received the credit they deserved for being daring visionaries. But around the same time, Bill Gates and Paul Allen came up with an idea even stranger and more fantastical: selling computer operating systems. This was much weirder than the idea of Jobs and Wozniak. A computer at least had some sort of physical reality to it. It came in a box, you could open it up and plug it in and watch lights blink. An operating system had no tangible incarnation at all. It arrived on a disk, of course, but the disk was, in effect, nothing more than the box that the OS came in. The product itself was a very long string of ones and zeroes that, when properly installed and coddled, gave you the ability to manipulate other very long strings of ones and zeroes. Even those few who actually understood what a computer operating system was were apt to think of it as a fantastically arcane engineering prodigy, like a breeder reactor or a U-2 spy plane, and not something that could ever be (in the parlance of high-tech) "productized."

This is one of the greatest stories I've heard this year (all 35 days of it). Reds098 received a laptop from PCTech4Free.com with help from Anything4Free. The problem was, as soon as he got it, his parents got suspicious. Here's his story:

"It all started when the laptop was initially shipped to my house. I didn't know that it had been shipped though, because I was never given a tracking number. So, when it came to my house, my parents signed for it and read the contents of the box.

I had no clue that the laptop was at my house until one of the other users, SportzStar01234 alerted me that he had received his. So, I went up to my parents room and saw the laptop box next to my parents bed.

Being the devilish kid that I am, I took the box, and started to walk down the hall to my room. My parents saw that I had the box and stopped me. They looked very serious. So, I explained to them how the site worked with all the referrals and such, and that it was legitimate. I even gave them the NY Times article and contact information to contact pctech4free.com.

My dad said that was fine, and he'd look into it, and I should get my laptop back. Well, time kept passing with me getting more and more frustrated. Finally, I was fed up. I didn't let them know though. We got in a fight over something completely different and my parents called the cops because it was their way of getting revenge on me, I suppose. No, my family isn't dysfunctional, we are very loving. It was just partly because they were mad, and partly because my dad couldn't find the phone number to contact the site. So they just called the cops to get it straightened out.

Well, so the cops came. He was incredibly rude to me. He made me print out all my e-mails, explain to him how the sites worked and everything. It was a total invasion of privacy, but I wasn't thinking clearly at the time, so I just did what he said. He kept literally screaming at me about felony theft.

Well, as it turns out, my 450 dollar gift card from pvps4free.com and my check from tech4free.com had also arrived. I had never know since there was no tracking on them either. My parents had taken them out of the mail without my knowledge.

And so the cop seized all my stuff, yelling at me all the while. I was extremely upset about being accused of felony theft.

The wait was on.

Finally, after two weeks, my parents called them and they said all my stuff was in fact, legitimate. So, after the paperwork cleared, I got my laptop back. However, my parents still have my gift card and check claiming that it will go into my savings account, and I won't be able to use it until college. That's not fine with me, but there's nothing I can really do. I mean, I'll get the money eventually. I have the most important thing right now, which is the laptop. And it's very awesome."

Using Gmail as a Spam Filter

I recently got my Gmail account up and running, but I wasn’t finding a whole lot of use for it since I have a primary account on MBoffin.com that I use for everything. Just for kicks, I decided to have all my MBoffin.com e-mail (spam and all) forwarded to my Gmail account to see how well it would handle my e-mail habits and workflows, and to see how well it would handle the spam.

Gmail did surprisingly well on all fronts. Much has been written in other circles about the nice and not so nice parts of Gmail’s user interface, so I won’t get into that discussion here.

After a couple of days using Gmail as my primary e-mail account, I started missing my MBoffin.com account. I like my MBoffin.com e-mail address and I’m not quite ready to leave it behind. But what to do with this nice new Gmail account? Then it hit me....

Could Gmail be used as a spam filter for my MBoffin.com e-mail account? The answer is yes, it can. And here’s how I figured it out.

Basic Procedure

Gmail allows you to forward incoming messages to any other e-mail address. Go to the Settings page and then to the Forwarding and POP tab. In the Forwarding option, set Gmail to forward all incoming mail to your regular e-mail account, and keep a copy in Gmail’s inbox.

(In this explanation, I will assume your regular e-mail address is user@domain.com and your Gmail address is user@gmail.com, and I apologize to Mr. User over at Domain.com and Mr. User over at Gmail if they get any extra mail from people following the steps in this article too literally.)

Once that forwarding rule is set on Gmail, all incoming mail to user@gmail.com will get spam filtered and anything left over will be forwarded to user@domain.com, with a copy left at Gmail. But that doesn’t help you much yet, because people are still sending spam directly to your user@domain.com account.

Now, over at your user@domain.com’s mail server, create a server-side filter to check the headers of any incoming e-mail. Have it forward to your Gmail account if it does not find the following in the header:

X-Forwarded-For: user@gmail.com user@domain.com

In English, the filter would be written: “Any mail that does not contain ‘X-Forwarded-For: user@gmail.com user@domain.com’ in the mail header should be forwarded to user@gmail.com”.

Once this server-side filter is in place, only mail on its way back from user@gmail.com (already filtered for spam) will be passed to your user@domain.com account's inbox. Everything else will be forwarded on to user@gmail.com to be filtered and forwarded back.

Another Advantage: Backup

Since Gmail is keeping a copy of all the mail it’s forwarding on, you now have an online backup of all your e-mails. If you were to somehow lose all the e-mails stored on your hard drive, you wouldn’t have to worry, as they would all be safely backed up over at Gmail, already spam filtered and everything. This means you can keep your local e-mail client clean and tidy, deleting e-mails as you see fit without worry that they are being deleted forever. They’re all backed up on Gmail the instant you receive them.

Will Spammers Now Add Headers to Prevent Being Forwarded to Gmail?

Sure, they could easily add the required header and trick your user@domain.com account into accepting spam, thinking it had already been spam filtered by Gmail. But here’s the kicker: They need to know your Gmail account address too.

Final Thoughts

Keep in mind that I only just figured this out tonight. I ran some tests and confirmed that it works, but that’s as far as it has gone. This hasn’t been tested over weeks and weeks, so if it continues to work well in the long run, great. Otherwise, I’m sure someone else will come up with a way to improve this.

While doing the testing, actual spam was being sent to my account (I get hundreds a day), and none of it made it through. It was all trapped at Gmail.

Update: Joe is testing this out with his Yahoo! account to see if a similar thing can be done. Report back, Joe! Let us know how it goes. Alex pointed out that you could set up parallel Yahoo! and Gmail accounts and sign up for the same spam lists to see which has better spam filtering.

The Evolution of RSS

RSS and Blogs

Back in October of 2003, when we first started building FeedBurner with hammer and chisel, RSS was, for many people, synonymous with blogs. Now that it’s almost 2006, RSS is, for many people, synonymous with blogs. We still see quotes in major media that conflate blogs and RSS as if they were inextricably bound together. A, therefore B. Blogs, therefore RSS. In early 2003, it was probably accurate to say that almost all blogs had feeds and almost all feeds were derived from a blog. Today, however, while almost all blogs still have feeds, there are innumerable feeds that are unrelated to blogs. Commercial publishers have embraced feeds wholeheartedly; most web services and many search engines now provide subscribed results; and podcasts and videocasts are entirely feed-based while not necessarily tied to blogs.

Why is this important? Our customers are publishers of all shapes and sizes. We will be successful if we provide services to our customers that best leverage the power of the feed in the broadest possible way. By understanding this emerging world of feed ubiquity, we can provide the most powerful suite of tools to all of our publishers. As we have grown to achieve critical mass with bloggers, podcasters, and now commercial publishers, we are also in the unique position to deliver tools that help each of our three customer types benefit from the combined market authority of the others. Everybody wins.

Start with the Benefits

Feeds provide three critical benefits to any digital media:

  1. A notification mechanism for updates to a specific channel of content
  2. The ability to subscribe to content, creating a persistent link between publisher and subscriber
  3. A semi-structured version of the content

Some of these benefits are provided by the feed itself, and some are a function of the software built to take advantage of feeds (e.g. aggregators).

The first benefit, a notification mechanism for content updates, was an early driver of RSS adoption by visitors to tens or hundreds of blogs. Instead of checking which hundred had been updated each morning, consumers could simply subscribe once to the feeds that interest them most and go to their aggregator to see when updates had been made. Notification via feed delivery has helped drive subscriber adoption.

As RSS and Atom feeds have been adopted outside the blogosphere, the second benefit of feeds has become a powerful driver of adoption on the publisher side of the equation by establishing and strengthening the bond between subscribers and publishers. Many months ago, we were speaking with a commercial publisher and one of the people in the room asked, “Why should we distribute our content via RSS if we have no idea how we’re going to monetize it?” Another person from the same organization answered, “Would you rather have visitors or subscribers?” We love a rhetorical Socratic dialogue just as much as the next person, so we’ve adopted this response as FeedBurner’s theme: Publishers value subscribers. Services that promote, facilitate and measure subscription are important. This is FeedBurner.

The third benefit that feeds offer is structure. Today, feeds are largely considered the output of content management systems. You create an article, an Atom/RSS version of that article gets generated, and that’s it. Visitors to the site see an html view of the content, and subscribers to the feed get some rendering of the same content (derived from the feed) in their aggregator. There is no feedback loop to the site from the feed.

Leverage the Structure as Input

Since the feed data is semi-structured, it is possible to enhance the feed with 3rd party services in a generalized way. Meta-data can be readily incorporated and other content can be spliced into the feed based on easily parsed feed elements. To illustrate this point, FeedBurner has been providing a number of basic feed enhancement services like meta-data additions (Media RSS, iTunes tags) and content splicing (links and photos) for some time now. But why should these enhancements only apply to the feed?

We can leverage the benefits of feed structure to allow publishers to provide a feedback loop to the Web site; the feed can become input to content on the site. There are unique capabilities that can be provided to the site as a function of performing transformations and enhancements to the feed derived from that web content. FeedBurner will be making several announcements throughout the winter regarding a thoroughly open approach to leveraging the structure of the feed in order to add activity and meta-data feedback to the site.

A Focus on the Item

Another trend we believe will emerge is an increased focus on the item. Today, commercial publishers sometimes find themselves deciding how atomic to make their feeds. Should they distribute twenty feeds, each general and well subscribed, or should they distribute thousands of feeds, each very specific, atomic and targeted? Some publishers even provide forms that drive the creation of individually assembled feeds.

We believe these choices will prove artificial in the long run, and since feeds are now widely searched, shared, and passed around from one person to the next via web-based aggregators or opml reading lists, it’s probably wise today to distribute a more limited collection of broadly subscribed feeds. We believe the choices surrounding feed focus are artificial because ultimately, it is the atomic unit of measure in the feed — the item — that is the most important and requires significant attention.

Items are already pulled from feeds today in a variety of both publisher-friendly and publisher-annoying ways. Blog search, of course, pulls items from disparate feeds in order to deliver specific search engine results. Since the results themselves may be subscribed, we quickly see items from one feed hopping into another mixed feed in a way nobody would find contentious. Blog spam, to visit the other end of spectrum, also sees tools that take advantage of the simple structure in RSS/Atom feeds to enable hucksters to rip, mix, and ring the cash register by creating blogs that are seeded with content that will attract high cost-per-click ads to sit alongside the content. The blog spammer thus monetizes the item without involving the publisher, and perhaps more annoying, the original content is made to seem the property of another.

There are a host of item level uses by third parties, however, that sit somewhere in the foggy continuum between search and blog spam, with publishers battling what appears to us an impossibly spiraling game of identifying good guys and bad guys based on the apparent intentions of the service or party repurposing the content. Tech Memeorandum? We’ll put that in the good pile — very useful service, nice to see our content next to other reputable sources, doesn’t seem to be monetizing at the publisher’s expense (e.g., publishers are fully credited, linked, etc.). Some random person using a third party RSS splicing service to add your feed to their feed? Hmmm, the intention is less clear. Why is my content being blended into somebody else’s feed without my knowledge? Subscribers to that feed are once removed from me by a party I don’t know and who may not be reputable; should I care?

The Opportunity

If we manage syndicated content at a more atomic level by attaching “threads” to the item, we can provide tools to publishers that enable not just the tracking of the thread, but also use the thread as a communications line between the world of web services and the content item. We can essentially staple rules, patterns, and meta-data to the content in a live and “always on” way, wherever the content goes. Of course there will be nefarious entities (aka evildoers, spammers, and bad guys) that will “snip” the threads in order to hide their repurposing and use. So be it. The act of snipping removes any doubt about the bad guy’s intentions, and the publisher’s spiraling guesswork in determining good from bad repurposing is eliminated. Further, by inserting complexity into the equation for the spammer while not increasing the friction of any other reuse transaction, the spammer’s “zero marginal cost” business becomes more difficult at nobody’s expense (contrast this to email spam fighting techniques in which making the spammer’s life more difficult makes everybody else’s life more difficult too).

By following the atomic unit of content around as it’s ripped, mixed, and republished, the content is afforded the widest variety of distribution paths to reach the largest possible audience, which in turn creates the greatest opportunity for monetization.

We would be remiss if we didn’t note that we have not even touched on the importance of brand in this section, and there are obviously publishers who want their highly paid international reporter’s mideast analysis appearing in a single subscribed feed next to their other highly commissioned content and not on a 3rd party aggregate site between “shmucky’s musings” and “Sprouts for the holidays: A vegan’s political journey,” all under blinking affiliate banners. We understand there is a continuum of content use issues to match the continuum of re-use intentions. Still, by managing the publisher’s intentions about fair use at the atomic level, and by providing these threads for an open communication channel with the content’s origin, a significant number of complexities and concerns start to look more like opportunities.

Unparalleled

There is much more to say about our thoughts and plans regarding the power of the feed, which is why “Feed for Thought” will be a series of reports as opposed to just one report. By leveraging more of the benefits of RSS, we can provide unparalleled distribution for a host of 3rd party web services, while also providing publishers with an unparalleled means of enhancing the content reading/listening/watching experience. We seldom get to use “unparalleled” twice in one sentence. When we do, we like to pause and reflect on our passion for overstatement and hyperbole, and that’s as good a place to wrap this up as any.
